You slept four hours. Maybe less. The day ahead has meetings, decisions, maybe a conversation you'd rather not have foggy. So you're weighing the two obvious rescue moves — crawl back into bed for a nap, or force yourself through a workout — and the nap is winning by a landslide. That's the honest instinct most of us have, and it makes sense on the surface. Sleep loss chews through memory and focus in ways researchers keep confirming.

The nappers showed no such in-the-moment sharpening. Their advantage came earlier and quieter — the nap simply lowered their sleep pressure and mental fatigue before the test even started, so their brains weren't dragging when it counted. Same finish line, entirely different route. Scientists call this neural degeneracy: the brain's habit of reaching the same outcome through more than one biological pathway. Why this flexibility actually matters
